TAILS OF TIME – An ode to the milk bar
The inspiration for this video story was both the name of the piece, “Tails of Time,” and the mood of the music that, to our ears, has a melancholy and nostalgic feel to it. We wanted to do a story about a place that’s been lost to time. Melbourne of years gone by seemed to be a shared history for both members of Xylouris White. So we chose to do the video as an ode to the milk bar – an old fixture of Melbourne not really seen anymore.
It’s a story familiar to Melbournians who grew up in the 70s and 80s, about hanging around at the milk bar, or on the street outside, making phone calls, buying lollies, probably cigarettes too, and old blokes also buying lollies and smokes, maybe a Tatts ticket. Sounds of families and foreign languages behind the counter in the dwelling attached. The milk bar owners, often migrants, were sometimes friendly, often grumpy, but ultimately held in esteem by locals and remembered with affection, becoming part of the story of someone’s youth. Now many former milk bars are in disrepair, or exist as gentrified buildings with the ghost sign left behind as the only evidence. It’s a familiar story everywhere.
